Guībǔ yǔ gǔbǔ·Pyromantic shell and bone divination

A pyromantic decision system using prepared turtle shell or animal bone whose cracks were interpreted; it is the earliest Chinese divinatory institution documented by a large surviving archive.

A conceptual conservation-table study of turtle plastron and scapula forms, prepared hollows and raking-light cracks; the cracks and markings do not reproduce any excavated oracle bone.

Core principles

Translate formulas into structure: what enters, how the model is arranged, and which relations drive interpretation.

A diviner drilled or grooved the medium and applied heat before reading the resulting cracks. Late-Shang inscriptions may record date, charge, prognostication and verification, placing question, judgment and outcome in one archival chain.

02Origins and historical development

Origins and historical development

Keep traditional accounts, surviving evidence and later transformations distinct.

Burned bones occur at Neolithic sites. Late-Shang Anyang materials reveal an organized royal practice covering sacrifice, war, weather, harvest, illness and travel. Turtle divination remained in ritual texts after the Shang but no longer occupied the same political center.

03Evidence limits and research debates

Evidence limits and research debates

Mystery belongs to the unknown—not to presenting uncertainty as fact.

Oracle-bone divination should not be equated with Zhouyi divination, and its rules of crack interpretation can be reconstructed only in part.

This dossier supports historical, textual and methodological study. Internal traditional explanations are not modern empirical validation and do not replace medical, legal, financial or other professional advice.
